Safe Home Base Moai Materials

Session 1: Safe Home Base Introduction

1. Overview / Learning Goals

This session introduces the Safe Home Base Moai, a 10-session group designed for globally mobile caregivers to build emotional resilience and connection through self-regulation and co-regulation. Participants explore the concept of the Window of Tolerance, learn to recognize and manage stress responses shaped by our evolutionary “caveman brain,” and begin developing daily practices (like breathwork, movement, and social connection) to stay grounded and model calm for their children.

5. Reflection Questions / Journal Prompts

  • Self-Assessment Prompt (1–10 scale):
Reflect on your current state of well-being. On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with each of the following in your life right now?

    • Sleep

    • Nutrition

    • Movement/Exercise

    • Connection/Belonging

    • Stress Management

  • Window Awareness Prompt:
Think back to a recent moment when you felt either overwhelmed or disconnected. Were you in a state of hyperarousal, hypoarousal, or within your Window of Tolerance? What internal or external cues helped you recognize this?

  • Caveman Brain Prompt:
How do you notice your "caveman brain" reacting to modern stressors like email, parenting challenges, or social disconnection? What is one strategy you can try this week to work with your wiring instead of against it?

  • Values-Guided Action Prompt:
In moments of stress or dysregulation, what kind of caregiver or human do you want to be? Describe a time when you aligned your actions with that intention, even when it was difficult.
